9 Days in the Rocky Mountains

including 3 days in Yellowstone National Park

Itinerary:

Days 1-3: CAPTIVE

Arrive in Denver and drive to Mission: Wolf Sanctuary in southern Colorado.

Mission: Wolf Sanctuary has spent nearly four decades caring for captive wolves and sharing their story through public education. Their enduring motto is "Education vs. Extinction".

For many years, co-founders Kent Weber and Tracy Ane Brooks traveled with wolves across the country on a bus-tour of educational programs. These days, they welcome visitors from all over the world to learn about wolves on-site and volunteer for the sanctuary.

Days 4-9: WILD

Stay at a hot springs in Grand County, CO, and visit a local cattle rancher to learn about the difficulties facing rural communities living with wild wolves.

Then, head north to Gardiner, MT, and lodge for four nights just outside Yellowstone National Park. Spend days in iconic Lamar Valley hoping to see wolves and other wildlife with the help of Animals Abound, a local professional guide service.

Animals Abound is led by Paul Brown, who has over 20 years of experience guiding wildlife and environmental education programs. He has been part of several research projects around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, including the Yellowstone Wolf Project.

On Day 9, you are now an official Ambassador for Coexistence. Travel to Bozeman, say goodbye to your newfound friends, and head home to share your adventure and everything you've learned with loved ones.

There will be 6 to 7 participants throughout the entire trip, plus 2 professional Rocky Mountain Lobo guides. Additional guides from Animals Abound will join for days spent in YNP. The price listed above is for a double-occupancy room, which means you would share with one other participant. If you would like your own room, or would like to come with a group and share a room, please reach out to ask about differences in trip cost.
You will be be accompanied by Sam Renk, creator of modern.peasant and former Education Caretaker at Mission: Wolf Sanctuary in Westcliffe, Colorado. He will offer his own experience and learnings from working alongside captive wolves during his time at the sanctuary. He has worked in the adventure tourism industry for over 5 years as both a guide and coordinator. Sam is an avid photographer and will take photos of the adventure along the way, offering digital copies afterward.
While in Yellowstone, professional guide services, meals, transportation, park fees, and use of spotting equipment are provided by Animals Abound, a private guide service out of Jackson, Wyoming. Animals Abound is led by Paul Brown, who has over 20 years of experience guiding wildlife and environmental education programs. He has been part of several research projects around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, including the Yellowstone Wolf Project.
If enrollment fills, there may be additional dates to offer. If you or your group are interested in another set of dates, please reach out to discuss the possibility of running a separate trip than listed here.
Days 1-5 TBD
Days 6-9 while in Gardiner, Montana, you will stay nights at 406 Lodge, a "boutique hotel" established in 2019. Breakfasts are one of two options: continental-style delivered to your room before departing or packed to enjoy on your drive into the park. Lunches, snacks, and drinks while in YNP are prepared and provided by your guides.

To serve that end, as a Rocky Mountain Lobo participant, you meet not only advocates for wild wolves but ranchers and other stakeholders too. In this way, you learn about wolves both up close and from afar while also gaining valuable insight into the real difficulties facing ranching communities throughout the Rocky Mountains now that wild wolves are around.
